Russia approves standards for classifying fossil mammoths for the first time
The first standards in Russia establishing the terminology and classification of mammoth fossils were recently adopted by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology. According to the new documents, the remains are divided into three groups - tusks, teeth and bones.

Moreover, the remains of not only mammoths are valuable, but also those of bison, horses, rhinoceroses, saber-toothed cats, giant beavers, giant and reindeer deer, cave hyenas, lions and bears, wolverines, aurochs, wolves, and even gophers and marmots.
But mammoth tusks are still of particular value. The documents adopted by Rosstandart indicate that Russia currently has a monopoly on the tusk trade market. Interest in them has increased especially after the global ban on elephant hunting and the extraction of elephant tusks.
The remains are extracted for further processing and storage, production of art objects and souvenirs, cosmetics, and for export. The remains removed from the ground should be packed in film and transported to the place of conservation and storage. After the extraction is completed, the environmental damage should be minimized. It is necessary to remove garbage, fill in holes, and in case of a spill of fuel and lubricants, notify the local branch of Rospotrebnadzor.
If citizens find valuable paleontological material (whole animal carcasses, skeletons, etc.), they should immediately stop work and notify the State Committee for Geology and Subsoil Use, as well as the Mammoth Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
