Paleontologists in Arizona have found the oldest pterosaur remains ever discovered in North America, the Smithsonian Institution reports.
"A research team led by the Smithsonian Institution has identified the oldest pterosaur on the continent, a winged reptile that lived during the age of dinosaurs," the organization said in a press release.
According to scientists, the age of the fossils found is about 209 million years, they belong to the late Triassic period. The remains were discovered in the layers of the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona.
In total, the team found about 1,200 individual fossils, including the remains of ancestors of modern frogs and ancient turtles.
