Villagers from different provinces of Turkey started a vigil in Cemal Süreya Park near the Turkish Grand National Assembly against the proposed law that would open olive groves to mining operations.
Ayşe Günay, one of the villagers from Muğla's Karacahisar Village who spent the night in the park, spoke as follows:
"You cannot uproot the centuries-old olive tree, they are living beings and they will resent it. Who can uproot me from my ancestors' land? You are planning to take the olive tree, where will you take us?"
Mehmet Aksoy from Kınık, İzmir said, “First they took our lands, then they made us slaves to the mine. This law is a threat to everyone.”
Halil Şallı said, “If the Olive Law is violated, not only agriculture but also life will be destroyed.”
