She began her film career with the 1994 film North. During those years, she starred in many films such as Home Alone 3, Little Girl, Manny & Lo, and If Lucy Fell. She became known for her roles in the 1998 film The Horse Whisperer, in which she appeared opposite Robert Redford and Kristin Scott Thomas, and the 2001 film Ghost World.

In 2003, she starred in the films Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring. She won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for Lost in Translation. She was nominated for two separate Golden Globes with these two films that same year. She also received two separate nominations for Best Actress at the BAFTA with Lost in Translation.

In June 2004, she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Academy Awards. That year, she starred in The Perfect Score, In Good Company, and A Love Song for Bobby Long. She was nominated for another Golden Globe for A Love Song for Bobby Long.

In 2005, she starred alongside Ewan McGregor in the Michael Bay film The Island. The same year, she starred in the Woody Allen-directed film Match Point, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. She is also considered one of Hollywood's young talents.
