Woman who left her newborn baby in airport toilet receives sentence

On October 13, 2024, a newborn baby was found by cleaning staff in the disabled toilet at Antalya Airport . Investigations revealed that the Russian citizen had given birth 12 minutes earlier. Ekaterina Burnazkina , who gave birth in the toilet and left the baby in the toilet, was caught by police teams while she was quickly going to the passport counters and completing her exit procedures. Burnazkina's mother, who was with her, was also detained by the teams.
RELEASED AT THE FIRST HEARING
Caught by teams from the Antalya Police Department Airport Branch, Burnazkina and her newborn baby were taken to different hospitals for treatment. After health checks, the Russian woman was taken to the police station and sent to court. Ekaterina Burnazkina was arrested by the court she was brought to and sent to prison. At the first hearing, she was released on probation.

SHE DID NOT KNOW SHE WAS PREGNANT
Burnazkina, who gave birth and abandoned her baby, stated in her statement that she did not know she was pregnant and did not realize she had given birth. The prosecutor of the hearing noted that the defendant's failure to clamp the umbilical cord of the newborn baby after giving birth could have affected its vital functions. The prosecutor noted that it was determined that the defendant, who left the newborn baby in the toilet with the worst hygiene conditions, knowingly and willingly committed the act, as his defense system was extremely weak.
UP TO 15 YEARS IN PRISON IS REQUESTED
In the ongoing case at the Antalya 3rd High Criminal Court, the prosecutor's opinion requested that the defendant Elena Burnazkina be acquitted and that the defendant Ekaterina Burnazkina, who abandoned her baby after giving birth in the toilet, be sentenced to 'attempted qualified murder' . The court panel sentenced the defendant Ekaterina Burnazkina to 15 years in prison for the crime of 'attempted deliberate murder' .
The defendant's mother, Elena Burnazkina, was acquitted. On the other hand, it was learned that the baby was under state protection.
