Elderly Oneida resident hurt, pet killed after unleashed pit bull attack

An elderly person is hurt and their dog is dead after an attack by two unleashed pit bulls on Oneida Nation of the Thames territory on Tuesday evening, southwest of London.
Sometime before 7:54 p.m., the 71-year-old Oneida resident was walking their dog when the two unrestrained pit bills attacked. Their owner of the two pit bulls was not present at the time, police said.
The victim was able to retreat to their residence and contact police. When they arrived, police found the two pit bulls in the area. One of the dogs charged at police, prompting an officer to discharge their firearm, police explained.
The move was made to ensure public and officer safety, police said.
The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their dog died as a result of the attack.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Middlesex County did not say whether any charges have been laid. The investigation is ongoing. They are reminding all pet owners to ensure their dogs are always leashed or properly contained to prevent dangerous encounters.
