London South Collegiate closed Wednesday due to lightning strike

A south London public high school has been temporarily closed Wednesday after lightning struck the building's chimney.

The lightning strike happened Tuesday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm, interrupting graduation ceremonies and forcing participants to reconvene nearby at Saunders Secondary School, the London Fire Department said in a social media post. The building is now structurally compromised.

"Information regarding final exams will be shared with London South Collegiate Institute families as soon as possible," the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) said in a statement to CBC News.

"TVDSB has retained an engineer to review the damage to the school building caused by severe weather. Under the direction of the engineer, we are working to complete repairs to the building today."

There were no injuries reported.
