Keith Higgins has been named as the new Mayo U20 football manager.

The former dual star saw off stiff competition from David Brady and John Maughan to be chosen as Peadar Gardiner's successor, having previously served as a selector under the Crossmolina man. Higgins was ratified for a two-year term at last night's county board meeting. His selectors include former Mayo players Kevin McLoughlin and David Drake as well as Mark Ryan from Kilmeena.

“Keith Higgins was an outstanding dual player for Mayo and I would like to wish him and his backroom team well in the weeks and months ahead,” Mayo GAA chairman Seamus Tuohy said.

“Keith was one of the finest defenders of his generation and I know he will bring all that expertise, determination and commitment to his new role.”

Higgins won eight Connacht SFC medals, one Allianz League, four All-Stars and also played in six All-Ireland SFC finals in a magnificent Mayo football career. In addition, he won two Lory Meagher Cups with the Mayo hurlers along with a Railway Cup medal with Connacht. He continues to line out for Ballyhaunis in the Mayo SFC.
