Kevin McStay is convinced Mayo can still have a say in the destination of the Sam Maguire, despite their shock home defeat to Cavan.

The under-pressure manager was surprisingly upbeat ahead of Mayo’s trip to Tyrone on May 31 and another difficult assignment against back-to-back Ulster champions Donegal at a neutral venue in their last game of the All-Ireland SFC round-robin series.

“I believe we can (lift it for Tyrone). That’s not us out there. In parts, but in very small parts. We were hoping to bring what was good in the Connacht final and add to it,” he told reporters.

“We’re a very, very competitive team. Tyrone away is difficult. It will ask really big question of us. But it will tell us a lot about our desire and our own character and I’m confident we will produce a fair performance up in Omagh.”

McStay added: “We really have to get ourselves together for this challenge against Tyrone. Morale swings up and down and that’s the nature of sport. But our job is to get after them now and bring the troops together.”
