Millions from US VC and Hanno Renner for new database technology – with this pitch deck

The Munich-based startup CedarDB has raised approximately €5.3 million in a seed round. The round was led by Californian tech VC Amplify Partners, which, according to CedarDB, contributed €5 million, a large portion of the round. The remaining €250,000 came from a total of six angel investors , including Jordan Tigani (founder of the startup Motherduck ), Hanno Renner (founder and CEO of Personio ), and Wes McKinney (partner at VC Composed Ventures).
CedarDB has developed a database system that promises fast and versatile data processing. The tech startup aims to enable companies and data scientists to share different data types—relational, tabular, graph, and document-based data—in a single system. This should enable business analytics, fast transaction processing, and AI applications to be handled efficiently and cost-effectively. The technology of the same name thus marks a new generation of databases.

The startup team intends to use the fresh capital primarily to acquire (new) customers. To this end, the startup is also focusing specifically on the US market, where initial contacts have already been made through CedarDB's investors. The company has already had a few pilot customers, explains Managing Director Moritz Sichert in an interview with Gründerszene. Now, the company wants to specifically target the fintech sector , among others. The product could be of interest to banks and stock exchanges, says Sichert. First, however, it is important to build trust. "Especially when it comes to the critical topic of databases, many companies rely on stability and continuity," says the startup's co-founder. Here, the company needs to prove itself – for example, by gaining well-known companies as customers.
CedarDB is a spin-off of the Chair of Database Systems at the Technical University of Munich . The five founders earned their doctorates in computer science there and worked on the technology behind CedarDB as part of their research until they founded the company almost a year ago. Since then, the team has grown to ten people.
