Alternative for Germany | Stefan Hrdy: AfD calf-biter sentenced
Former police officer and AfD gun fanatic Stefan Hrdy has been sentenced to 90 daily fines of €50 each for a biting attack on an activist. In addition to the fine, the politician from the far-right party, also known in the media as the "calf biter," faces
gun law consequences.
The most important piece of evidence is a published video recording of the incident. The footage shows Hrdy standing on the sidelines
of the AfD federal party conference in June 2024 and
He runs toward a barrier while pointing his cell phone at demonstrators. When the activists demonstratively block his way, he drops into the crowd, knocking one of them to the ground. While he's lying there, Hrdy grabs the victim's leg and bites him in the calf. A police officer later testified on the witness stand how he had to pull Hrdy away from the victim. The video shows clear bite marks. The victim did not file a complaint himself. Nevertheless, the public prosecutor's office saw a particular public interest. This is probably also because, in addition to the viral video, an interview is circulating in which the defendant speaks with the
"Tick bite" boasted.
The defendant was unsteady when walking. He was also pushed and kicked in the back of the knee. The grabbing and biting were also merely reflexes, and he acted in self-defense. Furthermore, according to the argument of Hrdy's defense attorney, the principle of in dubio pro reo, in case of doubt, should apply to the defendant. But the judge had no doubts and was not impressed by the explanations. She sentenced the AfD politician. This is likely to have consequences for Hrdy: The former police officer had only in April 2025 fought protractedly, all the way to the Higher Administrative Court in Münster, that membership in the AfD was grounds for revocation of a
firearms permit is not sufficient.
However, in Hrdy's case, anyone sentenced to at least 60 daily rates for intentional bodily harm generally loses their firearms license. Hrdy was even sentenced to 90 daily rates. Upon inquiry, the responsible police authority confirmed that the firearms authority conducts further inspections once a conviction becomes final.
