Kai Wegner travels to Windhoek – and misses a strong signal for Kyiv or Istanbul

The Governing Mayor visits one of Berlin's twin cities, but it's the wrong one. A visit to Kyiv or Istanbul would have been a strong statement. A commentary.
March was a difficult month, also for Kai Wegner . Just as Berlin's Governing Mayor was about to visit his counterpart, Ekrem Imamoglu, from Berlin's twin city, Istanbul, he was arrested at home on flimsy grounds. He had likely simply become too dangerous for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Wegner canceled his trip to Turkey's largest city, with which Berlin has a special relationship and should definitely intensify it. There were plenty of issues to discuss. Hundreds of thousands of people of Turkish descent live in Berlin—and both cities are home to a large number of refugees from Syria. He couldn't go if his colleague was in jail.
