HZA-MD: Inspections in snack bars and late-night shops: The Magdeburg Main Customs Office identified six violations resulting in tax losses totaling nearly €4,570. A total of six criminal proceedings were initiated on suspicion of tax evasion, and one administrative offense was initiated due to the lack of cooperation of a business owner.

On June 4, 2025, our colleagues conducted two inspections at grocery stores in Bernburg and Aschersleben, which also sell tobacco products. In addition, a tax inspection was conducted at a snack bar in the Salzland district. As a result, 7,260 untaxed cigarettes, 202 vapes, 4,149 ml of tobacco substitutes, and 31 cans of oral tobacco (the sale of which is completely prohibited in Germany) were seized from the stores, resulting in a tax loss of €2,429.82.

"Some of the untaxed goods were openly offered for sale, but some were also hidden from view, for example, in trash cans. One of the operators was already known to the officials, as 25 liters of untaxed tobacco substitutes were recently seized from other stores owned by this owner," said Sebastian Schultz, press spokesman for the Magdeburg Main Customs Office.

One day later, on June 5, 2025, KEV officials again carried out inspections, partly together with forces from the Financial Control of Illegal Work of the Magdeburg Main Customs Office, in two so-called late-night shops and a snack bar in the city of Halle (Saale).

"Substantial quantities of untaxed tobacco products or those prohibited for sale in Germany were once again discovered. These included 8,230 ml of substitutes, 386 vapes, and 16 cans of oral tobacco, resulting in a tax loss of €2,139.80. Here, too, the sellers came up with some creative hiding places. Our colleagues were able to find some of the goods in a microwave or a gas stove," Schultz continued.
