Madrid exports its metro model to Egypt with a plan for the Alexandria subway: 20 stations and almost 21 km

The experience of a transportation network that has shaped the mobility of millions of people in Spain is preparing to cross the Mediterranean . A new international agreement will allow the technical expertise developed in Madrid to be put at the service of a city with centuries of history and unstoppable urban growth.

The Community of Madrid has signed an agreement to develop the operational plan for the future Alexandria Metro (Egypt). The project, valued at approximately €50,000 and expected to last five months, will be carried out by Metro de Madrid in collaboration with the Spanish engineering firm Sener , which is already working on the first phase . The alliance will bring the experience accumulated in planning, operation, and maintenance of one of Europe's most efficient networks to the Mediterranean city.

A strategic line for the Egyptian city

The infrastructure being considered will have 20 stations spread over nearly 21 kilometers . Its route will connect Alexandria's historic center with the residential area of Abu Qir to the northeast. Most of the line will be built over a viaduct , although the southwest section will be built on the surface, utilizing part of the old tram route.

The goal is to design a reliable, efficient, and sustainable service that adapts to the high density and unique urban layout of Alexandria.

The work of the Madrid Metro will be key to defining an operation that responds to the real needs of the population. The plan will include criteria for optimizing frequencies, organizing operating personnel , and maintaining high reliability standards. It will also assess how to integrate the infrastructure into a city characterized by its high density and unique geographic distribution, with a view to ensuring long-term sustainable mobility . The planning will take into account estimated passenger demand, as well as the specific characteristics of the urban environment and the local rail system.

A collaboration that expands international projection

This agreement joins other international initiatives in which Madrid Metro participates. These include consulting services for the Delhi Metro on the implementation of the Last Mile freight transport project, a pioneering plan in India that seeks to optimize urban delivery by reducing congestion and polluting emissions, and cooperation with the Lima Metro on its Line 2 and the Line 4 branch.

In the Peruvian capital, a multidisciplinary team is coordinating the operation of the five kilometers already in service and planning the opening of the remaining 30 kilometers. These completely underground routes will be equipped with cutting-edge driverless technology ( GoA4 ) and are expected to be operational in phases between 2023 and 2028. Metro de Madrid is involved in all stages: design, engineering, commissioning, operation, maintenance, training, and RAMS systems , reinforcing its role as a trusted technical partner in the project.

Technical assistance in other countries

Also noteworthy is the collaboration with the Lisbon Metro , where Madrid-based experts are working on the technological modernization of signaling on its yellow, blue, and green lines by implementing the CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) system in a project that will be carried out between 2025 and 2026.

In six months, 17 delegations from around the world have visited Madrid to learn about its management and innovation model.

This initiative is part of the ambitious plan to modernize the Lisbon network , which also includes the acquisition of 14 new tripartite units (42 carriages) and the adaptation of 70 existing trains , with an estimated investment of 114.5 million euros.

A benchmark that attracts global interest

The international reach of the Madrid subway is growing. In the first half of the year alone, the Madrid Metro has received 17 foreign delegations interested in its management and innovation methods. These included representatives from Santiago de Chile , Medellín, Copenhagen, and universities such as Tampa (USA) and Gustave Eiffel (France), as well as from other institutions such as the Qatari Ministry of Transport.

With this new challenge in Alexandria , the Madrid network strengthens its role as a global leader in metropolitan transport planning and operation , bringing its model to one of the most iconic cities in the Mediterranean.
