2026 Budget: La Libertad Avanza seeks to postpone its debate, to address it in extraordinary sessions

The La Libertad Avanza (LLA) bloc of deputies is pushing for negotiations with the more moderate factions in Congress to postpone the debate on the 2026 Budget , with the aim of holding the discussion during the extraordinary sessions and with the new legislative composition that will take office on December 10 , when the ruling party, along with its allies, will achieve the largest minority in the lower house .
The original timeline , approved by the opposition on October 8 , stipulated that the bill should be debated in the Chamber of Deputies on November 11 , so that it could then be discussed in the Senate before the close of the ordinary sessions. However, the ruling party believes that the change in the composition of Congress justifies rescheduling the debate .
Parliamentary sources confirmed that the Peronist bloc seeks to maintain the scheduled date for the bill's approval, although they acknowledge that several conciliatory blocs are willing to accept a new session so that the debate can take place with the representatives elected last Sunday. In this scenario, the La Libertad Avanza coalition hopes to garner greater political support to pass the 2026 budget law.
From December onwards, the Government will have 107 legislators, adding the LLA, PRO and UCR caucuses, plus six Radicals close to the ruling party , so it would only need thirteen additional votes to reach the necessary majority in the final Budget vote.
According to sources consulted by Noticias Argentinas, negotiations will be conducted directly between the governors and the Casa Rosada (the presidential palace) to define a new framework for legislative debate. In this process, the position of the Encuentro Federal bloc could be decisive. Its leader, Nicolás Massot , announced that he will present a minority report projecting a smaller surplus than the ruling party's and including additional funding for the Disability Law, Universities, and the Garrahan Hospital .
The position of the Democracy Forever group, which supported the resolution approved in October, is also expected to be revealed. Their support could alter the balance of power within the committee. Meanwhile, PRO , UCR, and several provincial blocs have reportedly already given their preliminary approval to postpone consideration of the bill, paving the way for negotiations more favorable to the government.
In the coming days, the chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, Alberto Benegas Lynch, will continue the round of technical consultations. This Tuesday, the Secretary of the Treasury, Carlos Guberman, along with officials from the Ministries of Defense and Economy, are scheduled to appear and answer the legislators' final questions.
The 2026 Budget projects GDP growth of 5% , inflation of 10.1% , and an exchange rate of $1423 per dollar by December 2026. It also projects a 10.6% increase in exports and an 11% increase in imports . Total expenditures will amount to 148 trillion pesos , with estimated revenues of 148.2 trillion pesos , resulting in a primary surplus of 2 trillion pesos .
In the previous version of the project, submitted in 2024, the Government had allocated resources of 3.6 trillion pesos , but public universities demanded 7.2 trillion to guarantee their operation, a difference that has not yet achieved consensus between the government and the opposition.
