Feijóo brings forward the PP congress to July 5 and 6 in Madrid.

PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has announced his intention to bring forward the party's national congress to be held on July 5 and 6 in Madrid and will present his candidacy to remain its president.
Feijóo has advocated for holding this congress to "activate the party, prepare it to confront Pedro Sánchez at the polls, and design a solid and decisive, definitive government alternative," he stated today before the National Executive Committee meeting in Madrid.
" Yes, we're going to move from the papal conclave to the PP conclave ," the PP leader proclaimed before the party leaders. He explained to them that he "has been reflecting for some time" on the advisability of bringing forward the congress, a decision he made, Efe reports, due to "the decline of the government" in the face of "numerous cases of corruption within its ranks."
In this context, he cited the indictment of President Pedro Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez, the trial of his brother, David Sánchez, and the "suspicions" surrounding the state's attorney general, Álvaro García Ortiz.
A government, he added, "forced to talk about gold, parties, vans, and interns," which has "fixed-intermittent support in the Council of Ministers" and is "nonexistent in Congress," since it has no budget, nor "shame."
The Socialist Party, he signed, "has been expropriated by the Sanchistas," while Vox "has lost its patriotism because it has put a pat on the back for its foreign allies before the interests" of Spain.
Feijóo explained that a board meeting will be held next Monday to consider this proposal and specified that Madrid was chosen to "facilitate travel" for party members.
The Popular Party leader said that, despite being an extraordinary congress due to the fact that it is being held before the four-year term expires, " it must be ordinary from the perspective of ideas and the project" and that therefore the goal will be to emerge from it "with a framework policy of priorities and statutes that define its internal functioning."
A year earlierConsidering the party statutes, which stipulate that congresses are held every four years, the meeting is brought forward by one year.
The last popular conclave—which was also an extraordinary congress—was held in April 2022 in Seville, precisely when Alberto Núñez Feijóo assumed the presidency of the party following the controversial departure of Pablo Casado.
Feijóo's arrival brought to an end one of the party's darkest periods, an unprecedented crisis that saw Casado effectively leave politics after his head-on confrontation with the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso , who is precisely one of the voices calling for the congress to be brought forward.
