Javier Milei officially appoints his ambassador to Spain and completely normalizes his relations with Pedro Sánchez.

Javier Milei confirmed financier Wenceslao Bunge Saravia as his ambassador to Spain through a decree in the Official Gazette on Monday.

Bunge is now fully empowered to carry out his mission, having already been through the Senate, having received approval from Pedro Sánchez's government, and having announced that he was renouncing his dual Spanish nationality , as Cristina Kirchner's ambassador in Madrid, Carlos Bettini, did in the past.

Last week, amid the uproar over the Senate's rejection of the Clean Record bill, the Senate's approval of Bunge's appointment as ambassador went unnoticed. He received 53 affirmative votes and two negative votes, after the Agreements Committee brought the first confirmation to the floor.

Alec Oxenford was also confirmed as ambassador to the United States, where he was already designated "on secondment."

Bunge—who until September 2022 served as global co-president of the real estate and investment firm JLL and worked for 29 years at Credit Suisse—passed the Senate Agreements. So did Oxenford. Both performed well, defending their management plans without any problems.

This Monday, signed by Milei and his foreign minister, Gerardo Werthein, Decree 319/2025 confirmed the former Credite Suisse executive and son of the former spokesman for businessman Alfredo Yabrán—also known as Wenceslao Bunge—as ambassador to Spain. Yabrán, who had ties to the Carlos Menem administration, committed suicide in 1998, amid the crisis surrounding the murder of journalist José Luis Cabezas on the Argentine coast. But the Bunge family was in no way linked to these events.

"Mr. Wenceslao BUNGE SARAVIA (DNI No. 20,536,943) is hereby appointed Category "A" Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND WORSHIP, in accordance with the provisions of Article 5 of the Law of the Foreign Service of the Nation No. 20,957," the regulations state, without clarifying how the issue of payment of travel expenses will be, because businessman Bunge lives in Madrid.

With this confirmation, the very poor relations between Milei and Pedro Sánchez have also normalized diplomatically. They have stopped insulting each other for the time being but have never spoken to each other due to ideological differences, just as Milei has with Lula da Silva and other leaders.

Sánchez even openly supported former minister Sergio Massa in the Argentine election campaign, comparing Milei to an anti-democratic candidate. The libertarian never forgave him for this; he campaigned for his friend Santiago Abascal of the far-right Vox party in the European elections, and even called the socialist's wife "corrupt," which led Sánchez to recall his now former ambassador to Argentina.

In the end, Milei and Sánchez toned down their virulence, and the Spaniard sent Joaquín María de Arístegui as ambassador, who has a very low profile compared to what the Spanish have always had here.

Bunge's appointment faced a last-minute problem. Since 2023, the businessman has held both Argentine and Spanish citizenship, and that country does not accept one of its nationals representing another state , as it would entail special privileges comparable to those of the King.
