Sheinbaum: Security agreement with the US is almost ready and will respect sovereignty

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the security, migration, and trade agreement with the United States is practically finalized. This pact—key to the new Mexican government's foreign policy—seeks to establish binational coordination without ceding sovereignty, as the president emphasized from the National Palace.

The head of the Executive Branch explained that the document, part of a comprehensive agreement with her US counterpart, Donald Trump, is already largely drafted and includes clear protocols for respecting territorial boundaries, combating organized crime, and a joint immigration policy that also considers the rights of Mexicans in the US.

From the Treasury Department, Sheinbaum explained that the approach will be comprehensive, avoiding individual topics—such as migration, security, and trade—from being addressed in isolation.

"Our proposal, echoed by the G7, is to address the issues jointly and reach a comprehensive agreement," he explained.

The Mexican delegation will be led by Marcelo Ebrard, current Secretary of Economy, who will travel to Washington to meet with senior officials from the Department of Commerce and the State Department. The meetings will begin this Friday, in what is anticipated to be the final stretch of the agreement.

One of the most sensitive aspects of the agreement is border security. Sheinbaum was clear in stating that Mexico will not allow unilateral operations or impositions:

"Coordination arrangements are based on mutual respect. We will not allow violations of our territory," he stated.

He also reiterated that the Mexican government demands a consistent stance from the United States regarding its policy toward organized crime.

"You can't label organized crime as terrorism and then negotiate with it. This double standard must end," he declared.

The migration issue will be a central focus. Mexico will propose mechanisms to protect its citizens in the United States, as well as joint strategies for the orderly management of migration flows.

Regarding trade, the agreement also includes a strategic review of current treaties, opening the door to adjustments that benefit both economies. The presence of the U.S. Department of Commerce underscores the seriousness of this agenda.

This new phase, promoted by Sheinbaum, aims to consolidate a more equitable relationship based on dialogue, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty. The agreement is seen as a structural response to the common challenges between the two countries, leaving behind years of tensions, impositions, and unilateral measures.

The comprehensive agreement between Mexico and the United States is nearing completion. Unlike previous administrations, Sheinbaum is committed to a coordinated and coherent approach that strengthens security, respects the rights of migrants, and reactivates economic cooperation.

This potential new paradigm will not only mark the beginning of his six-year term, but also the tone of bilateral relations at a crucial stage for both countries.
