Chaos in Monaco: This is how the terrible Formula 2 accident took place, which left seven drivers out of the competition.

Chaos in Monaco: This is how the terrible Formula 2 accident took place, which left seven drivers out of the competition.

A collision between polesitter Alex Dunn and Victor Martins at the entrance to Turn 1 triggered a chain reaction accident, eliminating half the field.

The start of the Formula 2 race in Monaco was extremely chaotic when polesitter Alex Dunne had a poor start, allowing Martins to see an opportunity to overtake him on the outside at Sainte Dévote. The Frenchman was unable to complete the maneuver, as Dunne clipped his rear wheel , causing a multi-car accident .

The result was disastrous, both for Martins and for the other protagonists fighting to win the title, in a very tight standings.

Dunne's collision with Martins was followed by a chain reaction of accidents involving all drivers, including Richard Verschoor , who was unable to avoid the two leaders' blockade on the tight street circuit in time and damaged his front wheel so badly that he had to retire. He wasn't alone, as no fewer than 11 drivers were on the retirement list after just one lap.

The red flag waved immediately after the incident, and Leonardo Fornaroli, starting third, was the luckiest to escape the incident. The Italian managed to avoid chaos and thus took the lead of the reduced grid at the restart.

Meanwhile, there were moments of tension and anger in the pits, where Martins ranted at Dunne and couldn't believe the Irishman's attitude of wanting to take everything: "Who does he think he is, Max Verstappen?" the Frenchman angrily stated after the Spaniard Campos went to greet him.

The race finally resumed after many minutes of waiting, as the stewards determined that the drivers only had 20 minutes to compete in the race (due to the tight schedule margins with F1). In the opening minutes, Paraguayan Joshua Duerksen crashed at the Rascasse , triggering a Virtual Safety Car. The second VSC was caused, with 14 minutes left on the clock, by Dino Beganovic at the Casino.

Due to the delay of the incident, this became a Safety Car, while Jak Crawford, Kush Maini, Luke Browning and Roman Stanek stopped, which completely changed the race, since when the first three came in, Linblad overtook Colombian Sebastián Montoya in the stops, but both they and Fornaroli returned behind Crawford, the new leader.

In fact, first under a Safety Car and then a red flag, the race ended prematurely, with victory for the Alpine protégé, who had thus snatched a win despite qualifying seventh on Friday, which he described as "the luckiest day of my life." The podium was completed by Fornaroli and Montoya.
