Monterrey is the last team invited to the Liga MX playoffs. They were punished by thousands of fans at the BBVA Stadium, with boos for their poor performance, but they won the play-in series against Pumas with a 2-0 victory that guarantees them a spot in the title race. Date and time to be confirmed, they will face leader Toluca in the quarterfinals.
The university students didn't lack attitude, but every time they were even one step away from the victory, they ran into problems. If it wasn't Rogelio Funes Mori's mistakes, it was the injuries to Panamanian Adalberto Carrasquilla (left leg tear) and Lisandro Magallán.
Monterrey's game gained momentum with the introduction of Spaniard Sergio Canales, who made it 1-0 in the second half. Canales received the ball in the penalty area, shot, and forced Álex Padilla to lay it off, allowing Germán Berterame to convert the first goal in the 58th minute.
Jorge Ruvalcaba was sent off for a second yellow card, while Nelson Deossa got the second in the 89th minute. Coaches Efraín Juárez and Martín Demichelis also received red cards.
