Cuenca's Paleontological Train: The Dinosaur Trip You Can't Miss

Cuenca's Paleontological Train: The Dinosaur Trip You Can't Miss

This May 24th, Madrid residents have the opportunity to visit Cuenca and spend a unique cultural day. This Saturday, the Cuenca Paleontology and Heritage Train runs thanks to the collaboration between Renfe and the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha. Travelers will discover the numerous fossil remains found at the Las Hoyas and Lo Hueco sites in Cuenca .

Those interested will depart from Madrid Chamartín station on an AVE train at 9:00 a.m. and return from Cuenca at 7:06 p.m., arriving in Chamartín at 8:08 p.m. The ticket includes guided tours of the Cathedral of Santa María and San Julián in Cuenca and the Paleontological Museum of Castilla-La Mancha, where you can learn about the evolution of species and the world of dinosaurs through fossil remains.

Travelers will also have the option to visit, if they wish, the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art , located in the unique Casas Colgadas in the historic center of Cuenca, and the Roberto Polo Center for Contemporary Art Castilla - La Mancha , in the former church of Santa Cruz, whose admission is free.

Construction of Cuenca's Cathedral of Santa María and San Julián began in the late 12th century, but it also features elements from later centuries. Its original façade, for example, was replaced in the 18th century by another that had to be demolished in the early 20th century, when the current neo-Gothic façade was built. A visit to it, therefore, allows you to admire a complex series of architectural contributions from different artistic styles.

The Paleontological Museum of Castilla-La Mancha opened in 2015 to showcase the region's status as the "Land of the Dinosaurs" (it features 200 exhibits and 20 life-size reproductions). It houses the most notable fossils from Las Hoyas (Early Cretaceous of La Cierva) and Lo Hueco (Upper Cretaceous of Fuentes).
