Louisiana State Police announced Tuesday night that they had arrested the fifth of ten inmates who escaped from a New Orleans prison last Friday.

The latest individual to be arrested in connection with what is considered the largest jailbreak in Louisiana history is a man who was briefly seen on a surveillance camera in New Orleans' French Quarter last Friday, hours after the escape.

The man, who was arrested today by a task force that surrounded the apartment building where he was hiding, is accused of murdering another individual during a carjacking last year. More than 200 law enforcement officers continue the search for the inmates who escaped from a New Orleans prison on Friday and may have crossed into neighboring states, according to authorities.

The escapees are part of a group of ten men between the ages of 20 and 42 who escaped at midnight on Friday through a hole behind a toilet at the New Orleans Justice Center. Three of them were captured shortly afterward, and another was arrested yesterday. A maintenance worker at a New Orleans, Louisiana, jail was arrested today and charged with facilitating the escape of the ten inmates.

The employee admitted to authorities that one of the escapees asked him to turn off the water supply to the cell from which the inmates escaped. Instead of reporting the inmate, the employee followed his instructions, which enabled the escape. The escapees are serving sentences for murder and assault with a firearm and may be armed, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams reported yesterday, warning that several members of his team "have already left the city" for fear of retaliation. The prosecutor confirmed that state officials have asked neighboring Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Tennessee to keep their agents on alert for the possible appearance of the inmates in their territories.
