Education. More than 2,600 positions unfilled after the teacher competition

Despite a decline in the number of positions offered in the least attractive academies or disciplines, 2,610 (9.4%) of the 27,713 positions offered in public and private sector competitive examinations under contract have not been filled, according to a database compiled on Friday, based on admission results published on the official Cyclades platform.
The number of unfilled positions has fallen sharply over the past year (-34%) but this decline is essentially mechanical, due to a notable reduction in the number of positions advertised in competitive examinations in primary academies (nursery and elementary) and in the least attractive secondary specialisms (middle and high schools).
The Ministry of National Education welcomed an "improvement in the performance of primary school competitive examinations," despite "tensions in certain academies," and, in secondary education, "significant improvements" in "certain deficient disciplines," citing physics and chemistry, Spanish, and German.
1 in 5 math positions unfilledIn the public sector, 2,330 positions remained vacant (9.8%). In primary schools, the number of vacant positions (1,141) has been halved compared to 2024, due to a drop in the number of positions offered in competitive examinations in traditionally less popular academies (Versailles, Créteil and French Guiana).
In secondary education, the decline in the number of unfilled positions (1,189, -25% compared to 2024) is the result of fewer competitive exams for specialties struggling to find candidates. Mathematics, a subject emblematic of difficulties, accounts for nearly 400 unfilled positions, or one in five positions offered in competitive exams. In physics and chemistry, 103 positions were unfilled, compared to 157 in 2024, a decline mainly due to a decrease in the number of positions offered in competitive exams (-41).
In private education under contract, 280 positions remained vacant following the competitive examinations (7.2%, stable). To calculate these totals, we included all the competitive examinations held this year. However, for public primary schools, the National Education system generally excludes certain competitive examinations from its own calculations. Applying the methodology used last year by the Ministry, the number of unfilled positions this year would be limited to 526 in public primary schools, 1,715 in all public schools, 1,995 public and private combined.
