We tested: the new stays on Horse Island in the middle of the river

The light of the rising sun passing through the moving branches, the wind making the leaves sing, the scent of fir trees and the rising tide... all our senses awaken the moment we set foot on Cheval Island. Located in the heart of an archipelago on the St. Lawrence River, this private 14-hectare piece of land has recently welcomed visitors seeking to disconnect... or reconnect. The time is entirely yours.

The little story

Maude Carrier, QMI Agency

For decades, Cheval Island, located southwest of Isle-aux-Grues, was a sleepy land, sporadically frequented by its owners, goose and duck hunters. But Christine and Sébastien Leblanc, two dynamic entrepreneurs, had a vision for this wild piece of land: to build a project that reflected their own image.

Transforming this island into a cozy nest was a daunting challenge, as it's subject to the whims of Mother Nature. But the idea of sharing this magical place quickly took root, and charming accommodation units were born. Self-sufficiency and the environment are at the heart of their vision: solar panels for electricity, an ingenious water filtration system, a flourishing garden... Everything has been designed in perfect harmony with nature.

Charming and comfortable accommodations

Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure with friends, Cheval Island has the accommodations you need. Accommodating up to 14 people, the various units have one thing in common: they're as stylish as can be, tastefully decorated, and supremely comfortable. Quebec is also in the spotlight, with a strong focus on local purchasing, both for art and furniture.

Imagine yourself in a vintage caravan, perfect for couples, or in the Dormitory, with its four cozy bedrooms and large living room offering breathtaking views of the water. Some accommodations are equipped with a full bathroom, while others offer an outdoor shower for a unique experience. Whether there's a kitchen or not, it doesn't matter: all amenities are just steps away in La Grange, guaranteeing a hassle-free stay. Just don't forget to bring your groceries; no convenience stores here!

Animals at the heart of the experience

Every spring, a joyful menagerie arrives for everyone's enjoyment. Horses, chickens, peacocks, alpacas, and of course, the Leblancs' five dogs, true mascots, frolic as they please. Their presence is a true balm for the soul, adding a touch of well-being to your stay.

The art of contemplation

Horse Island is an invitation to slow down and marvel. Magic is revealed around every little trail. Here, a secret spot to meditate at low tide; there, Adirondack chairs perfectly placed to admire the sunset. In another place, a natural pool sculpted by the river's comings and goings. On one side, Charlevoix and its majestic mountains; on the other, Isle-aux-Grues, which inspired the great Jean-Paul Riopelle and continues to move Marc Séguin. Every step is a discovery, every viewpoint, a living canvas.

Getting to the island

Your getaway to Cheval Island begins with a short motorboat ride from the Montmagny wharf, with transportation included in your stay. But be warned, Cheval Island is a place where nature dictates its own rhythm. Departure and return times will depend on the tides and winds. The key word is "flexibility"!

Be prepared for the unexpected, as the weather might even play overtime, adding an unforgettable touch of adventure to your getaway.
