It all became clear to me only afterwards: there had been this misfortune in the family, when the war ended in 1945 I had two little sisters, one 12 years old and one 18 months old. Unfortunately a tank crushed them and they died. I hated my mother because she left me alone, sometimes when I was four I hid, I didn't say anything to anyone, I slept in the middle of the stairs. There was no electricity in our house, we ate when we had the chance, then when I was eight years old I started working, I cleaned in a gambling den, always in the Spanish Quarters, for 20 lire a day to buy a sandwich.
