Collectibles and co-investments: Matis offers club deals on art in Italy.

Matis , the first company in Europe authorized to propose co-investments in contemporary art through club deals , has arrived in Italy. Founded in 2023, the company has financed a total of 65 deals to date; after raising €5 million in its first year and over €30 million in 2024, it has set a goal of reaching €60 million by 2025.
Following its successes in France and Switzerland, Matis is expanding into our country with the aim of involving private investors, family offices, wealth management and private banking companies in a new opportunity for asset diversification: co-investment in works of art .
"Buying contemporary art directly requires expertise, capital, and a network of experts that is often difficult to build," explains Matis co-founder Arnaud Dubois , who was present at the press conference in Milan. "Matis simplifies this process thanks to its expertise in the art and finance fields. In this way, we open up the opportunity for private investors to invest in a safe haven like art, previously reserved for a select few collectors or institutional investors; all through a transparent and regulated investment process."
Specifically, Matis offers exclusive club deals on artworks by iconic 20th-century artists such as Andy Warhol, Lucio Fontana, Pierre Soulages, Alighiero Boetti, and François-Xavier Lalanne , known as "blue chip" artists, with a value between €500,000 and €5 million. In the art world, "blue chip" artworks are high-value works that have had a profound impact on the history of art itself, recognized by museums, international galleries, and collectors. Like blue chips in the stock market, this segment of art is characterized by stable and rising values and high liquidity.
Matis also brings together a team of art market experts capable of expertly evaluating and selecting works, and relies on a consolidated network of specialized dealers and galleries who support the company in resale transactions. This allows Matis to offer club deals with a maximum investment term of five years, and an estimated (not guaranteed) average holding period of two years. The minimum investment to participate is €20,000.
Matis's activities are regulated by the AMF (Autorité des Marchés Financiers), the French CONSOB, which has issued a European-recognized authorization. To guide the development of the Italian market, the two founders of Matis, Arnaud Dubois and François Carbone (experts in art and financial investments, respectively), called upon Alberto Bassi , an experienced entrepreneur, manager, and venture capitalist, co-founder of BacktoWork (one of the first platforms in Italy dedicated to investing in startups and SMEs) and the private equity firm Eighteen Capital.
Demonstrating the effectiveness and relevance of the investment model developed, in less than two years Matis has selected 65 works and has already carried out 16 resales , including a work by Lucio Fontana, with over 14 million euros returned to investors and an average net return of 17.7% . The annualized internal rate of return (IRR) net of expenses (not guaranteed) is 33.3%3 (data updated as of September 2, 2025).
"Italy represents a strategic step in Matis's European expansion. Protecting and growing their assets remains a top priority for private investors, who operate in a volatile and uncertain environment. At the same time, wealth managers, private bankers, and family offices are constantly working to identify new diversification solutions and instruments uncorrelated with traditional financial markets. In this context, Matis is introducing art as a new asset class in private markets: a safe haven that, in addition to providing protection in times of instability, offers a concrete opportunity for value creation and integrates into investors' long-term strategies," concluded Alberto Bassi, Head of Italy at Matis.
