Former Ilva steelworks sign agreement on decarbonization of plants

The agreement on the decarbonization of the former Ilva plants has been signed. The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy and all national and local governments, according to sources at MIMIT.
In the agreement on the decarbonization of the former Ilva plant, the parties "undertake to convene a new meeting of the roundtable after September 15th – the deadline for submitting binding offers – to examine the initial findings of the Procedure and evaluate the possible location of the pre-reduction plants (DRI) needed to supply the electric furnaces," the document states.
The agreement agrees that the buyer must "submit, within the timeframes that will be indicated during the award process, the necessary environmental and health authorization requirements, which must take into account the plant's progressive and complete decarbonization through the construction of electric furnaces to replace the blast furnaces, which will be gradually decommissioned over a specified period."
Regarding the prospects for the reindustrialization of the vacant lots , these will be examined "according to the guidelines of the 'Taranto table', taking into account the principle of valorizing the related industries, to be implemented through a call for expressions of interest in industrial and production investments, with the appointment of a Commissioner ." "In order to avoid or mitigate the negative impact of the steelworks' green transition on employment, active and passive labor market measures will also be evaluated, including in furtherance of ongoing discussions with trade unions."
The parties "commit to signing a program agreement" to "establish appropriate measures to promote local development, as well as to identify organizational structures that will monitor the timelines of environmental administrative procedures regarding strategic plants so as to implement them. The program agreement will specifically address the needs of the province of Taranto and the municipalities of Taranto and Statte, combining the fulfillment of the right to health, the environment, and employment. The first meeting for this purpose will be held in September ."
