Chess gives another gold to Yucatán

Yucatán opened the 2025 National Chess Olympiad with a gold medal, won by Mexico's current leading global champion.


International Master Sión Galaviz Medina earned Yucatán's first medal in Swiss-style chess by winning the Under-20 category with 5.5 points, leaving Cristian Villarreal Hurtado of Jalisco in second place with 4.5 points, and Miguel Montes Orozco of Querétaro in third place with 4 points.
In the U-12 girls' category, Yucatecan Danna Katerine Tuk Martín took home a silver medal with 4.5 points, trailing only Mis Guzmán García of Chihuahua, who achieved six points. In third place was Ainara Medina Lozada of Mexico City, also with 4.5. The tiebreaker favored the Yucatecan.
In the U-20 women's category, Yucatán added a silver medal with Lía Castellanos Hernández, who earned five points, tied with Paula Hernández Díaz, from Jalisco, winner of the gold, with the bronze going to Erin Huerta Osorno, from Tlaxcala, with 4.5.
In the Under-16 category, Caissa Galaviz Medina took the bronze medal with 4 points and, although she put up a fight, she was beaten by Guadalupe Montano Vicente, from Oaxaca, with 5.5, and Mary García Dorado, from Chihuahua, with 4.5.
With Sión's victory, Yucatán reached 81 gold medals. It now sits sixth in the medal table.— Gaspar Silveira
