Unauthorized citizens held border controls between Ter Apel and the German Rütenbrock during the Pentecost weekend. The initiators wanted to stop asylum seekers who would cross the border. Nieuws van de Dag discussed this last night.
Justice and Migration Minister David van Weel immediately called on citizens not to carry out border controls themselves. "I understand the frustration, but I really call on this group not to do this and to stop ," he said through a spokesperson. "Let the police and military police do their job and obey the law."
News of the Day (SBS6) discussed the citizens who independently carried out border controls for two nights with about twenty men last night. You can see it in the video above.
Migration expert Jan van de Beek believes the situation is a result of the 'failing asylum policy'. "The vast majority of Dutch citizens are in favour of a stricter asylum policy. That just won't get off the ground." Van de Beek sees that the Netherlands cannot regulate the policy of borders like the one at Ter Apel in Groningen itself. "That has been outsourced to international treaties. You can vote for a right-wing cabinet, but it won't get off the ground at all. That is of course frustrating for citizens."
