Residents are afraid to leave their homes. Wolves come to the door and attack animals

The villages of Litwinki, Achrymowce, Starowlany, Ogrodniki and Popławce are just some of the towns where everyday life is disrupted by the growing activity of wolves. Residents who recently walked in the forest or let their children out in the yard are now afraid to leave their homes. Wild animals approach homes even in broad daylight.

Podlasie. Wolf attacks on dogs are becoming the norm

According to residents, cases of dog bites have become common . Mieczysław Bakun from Starowlany told "Super Express" about the tragic events that affected his farm. In the autumn, he lost his dog Rex. "All that was left of Rex was a paw in the bushes and a few drops of blood by the gate," he reports. Two weeks ago, at dawn, the wolf appeared on his property again. "I saw everything through the kitchen window. I hit the glass, I screamed. This time it ran away," says Mr. Mieczysław. In his opinion, wolves no longer show fear of humans.

Wolves have already killed five dogs within a 500-meter radius of his home. The man emphasizes that more and more residents are giving up on owning dogs, considering it pointless. "People don't buy dogs anymore, because why would they," he adds with regret.

Stanisław Kieda from Litwinek also told about his loss. The farmer, who runs a dairy farm, talks about his dog Wabik, who accompanied him at work for years. "He was a true friend, a family member and an ideal assistant to the farmer," he says with emotion. One morning Wabik disappeared without a trace. "We only found some blood and traces of wolf paws three meters from the house," Mr. Stanisław reports. This was already the second dog that wolves had killed.

A threat to children and farm animals

Joanna Zieziula from Ogrodniki is struggling with a similar problem. The mother of three children admitted to "SE" that she does not allow them to go out into the yard alone after the tragic events. Last year, wolves mauled a bull and two heifers. "They were scratching at the barn door while people were working inside. This cannot happen!" - says the woman, appealing for action from the relevant services. "I am not saying to shoot these wolves right away, but let these naturalists do something so that we can live and work normally," she adds.

Wolves in Poland - protection and reality

Wolves in Poland have been under strict species protection since 1998. The population of this predator in the country is estimated at over 4 thousand individuals (according to data from the General Directorate for Environmental Protection from 2022). Killing a wolf is punishable by up to 5 years of imprisonment. Foresters point out that wolves are naturally timid and avoid people, but cases from Podlasie contradict this thesis. More and more residents believe that the scale of the phenomenon is getting out of control.
