Serial Killer's Nephew Visits Him in Prison, Makes Surprising Discovery
Although Maudsley earned the chilling nickname "Hannibal the Cannibal" after rumours that he had eaten the brains of one of his victims (later debunked), his family call him something else entirely. The story was recalled by mirror.co.uk.
British serial killer 'Hannibal the Cannibal' is nicknamed 'Wolfie' by his familyRobert Maudsley went to prison for murder. That's not all, he murdered three other inmates behind the prison walls. That's why he spent 45 years in a special isolation cell.
As Gavin revealed, the uncle was known as "Wolfie" for years. The reason? His long hair, thick beard and wolf -like appearance. What's more, Maudsley still signs his letters to his nephew as "Wolfie."
His nephew describes him as a "funny guy". Gavin recalls that on visits to Wakefield Prison, where Maudsley was serving his sentence, the atmosphere was surprisingly light.
"We laugh during the visits. You know, when you're in prison, you accept that you're there. There's no point in crying. It's time to joke around and enjoy the moment with the family," Gavin said.
Visits took place in the basement of Wakefield Prison, where Maudsley was isolated from other prisoners . His family could only see him through a hatch in the barred wall, and his only physical contact with loved ones was a handshake.
Gavin notices that his uncle is still living with memories from decades ago.
"It's like going back in time. All his memories are from the '60s and '70s," the nephew said.
Despite the difficult conditions, Maudsley does not complain about his life behind bars and has never tried to appeal his sentence.
"He accepts where he is. There is no regret or despair in it," Gavin adds.
After four decades in Wakefield Prison, Maudsley was recently transferred to Whitemoor Prison in Cambridgeshire, a decision made after a disagreement with prison staff and a hunger strike that lasted five weeks.
Maudsley’s family, who live in Merseyside, have yet to visit him in his new home. Gavin admits he hopes his uncle will return to Wakefield, although he knows it may be difficult.
