The prosecutor resigned after pressure to open a case against Leticia James.

Federal prosecutor Erik Siebert, who refused to open cases against opponents of US President Donald Trump, resigned on Friday hours after the president himself publicly demanded it, US media reported.

“I want him gone,” Trump said when asked by a reporter about Siebert, a federal prosecutor from Virginia.

Siebert recently informed Justice Department officials that there was insufficient evidence to pursue a fraud case against New York State Attorney General Leticia James, the Washington Post reported. The case was suspected of mortgage fraud.

Before Trump returned to the presidency, James sued him for fraud, resulting in him being fined nearly half a million dollars. An appeals court overturned the verdict, finding the amount excessive, but James announced she would appeal.

As American media emphasize, Siebert also refused to open a case against another Trump opponent, former FBI director James Comey. Comey was dismissed in 2017 while leading an investigation into possible Russian interference in Trump's election campaign. (PAP)
