We will go from sea to sea. An impressive expressway will change everything

- The S1 expressway is one of the most anticipated routes in Poland by drivers. Drivers will be able to drive it this year.
- One of the longest and highest viaducts in Poland was built along the S1 route.
- The facility is almost ready and makes a huge impression. Drivers and their passengers will be able to admire the beautiful surroundings from the large overpass.
The construction of the S1 expressway is now – after the completion of the A1 and A4 motorways – the most important road investment in southern Poland. - A key transport corridor will be created connecting the A1 motorway with the Polish border with Slovakia in Zwardoń - explains Marek Prusak, spokesman for the Katowice branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
The last missing section of the S1 expressway is being built just before the Polish border with Slovakia. The route is being built with drivers in mind, who will conveniently travel to the south of Europe, as well as residents of the communes in the Żywiec region, such as Węgierska Górka or Milówka. Now trucks and passenger cars drive on the old national road under the windows of residents.
This is because drivers can conveniently reach Przybędza in Żywiecczyzna via the S1 expressway, and from Milówka they continue to the border via the convenient expressway. Between these towns, they are crowded on the dangerous national road No. 1, because an 8.5-kilometer section of the expressway, the so-called Węgierska Górka bypass, is missing.
Construction of the S1 expressway in the Beskids is coming to an endFortunately, this will soon change. The contract for the construction of the S1 expressway section was signed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in the fall of 2019. Work began in the summer of 2020.
Now, the progress of construction work on this section of the S1 expressway is approaching 95 percent.
At the end of 2025, this section of the expressway will be made available to drivers.
- said Marek Prusak, spokesman for the Katowice branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, in an interview with PortalSamorzadowy.pl.
The construction of the S1 expressway in the Beskids will cost approximately PLN 1.6 billion.
A gigantic overpass along the S1 expressway. It is one of the Polish recordsSuch a large sum is no coincidence. The route is a huge challenge for designers and builders. The S1 road crosses the Beskids, which is why it had to be routed through tunnels and large viaducts.

The longest of them is practically ready. Drivers will enter it at the beginning of this section of the S1, right after the Przybędza junction. The huge structure stretches over the Węgierska Górka valley, Zielona Górna Street, ravines, mountain streams and houses standing in this area.
The gigantic viaduct is almost 1 km long and is one of the longest and highest in Poland.
The structure was founded on 10 supports ranging from 7 to even 25 m in height. This means that drivers will travel almost 30 m above ground level . This is roughly the height of a 10-story block. Drivers and passengers traveling on the viaduct will be able to admire the beauty of the Beskids from above.
What other huge overpasses are there in Poland? For example:
- viaduct along the A1 motorway in Młodoszyn - 1,676.9 m long,
- almost 1.6 km and 20 m high - these are the dimensions of the viaduct, which is part of the S7 route in Kraków.
- the longest viaduct in the country is the one on the Gdańsk Southern Bypass. It is 2,780 m long.
Drivers are also waiting for the completion of other sections of the S1 expressway.
The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) emphasizes that the expansion and construction of new sections of the S1 in the Silesian Voivodeship is aimed at improving travel safety and comfort, as well as moving transit traffic out of urban areas.
More than two hours - that's how long it currently takes to travel from the Pyrzowice junction to the state border in Zwardoń. After the reconstruction, the journey on this road will be shortened by almost half, and covering this slightly over 130-kilometer section will take about 70 minutes
- emphasizes GDDKiA.
The management emphasizes that in this way the road will become part of the route from sea to sea. The S1 Pyrzowice - Zwardoń expressway is located in the VI corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network, connecting the countries of the Baltic Sea basin with the countries of Southern Europe. The extension of the S1 expressway south of the Polish border is the Slovak D3 motorway from Žilina to Skalite.
So far, a total of over PLN 7.4 billion has been spent on the construction of the S1 route.
