Cultural figures defend dismissed director. Appeal to President Krzystek

Cultural figures defend dismissed director. Appeal to President Krzystek

Representatives of Szczecin's culture and science have spoken out in support of Cezary Cichy, who was dismissed from his position as director of the Culture Department at Szczecin City Hall a few days ago. They have written an appeal to the mayor on his behalf.

"As representatives of the cultural community, we recognized Mr. Cichy as a competent person, open to dialogue and genuine cooperation. His approach was characterized by transparency, equal treatment of cultural entities – regardless of their form or scope of activity – and a high level of communication. These values translated into concrete results: streamlined grant and competition procedures, clearly defined operating principles, and above all – the feeling that the office is becoming a partner, not just an administrator," we read in the appeal.

The residents of Szczecin who signed the petition argue that under Cezary Cichy's leadership, high standards were established, offering hope for a change for the better in cultural management in Szczecin. They also question why the decision to dismiss him was not consulted with "advisory bodies."

The conclusion is as follows: "We fear that a sudden interruption of this course of action will not only halt the reforms that have already been initiated, but will also undermine the community's trust in city institutions. Szczecin deserves to have culture managed by competent, committed, and honest people – present in the city's cultural life and understanding its specificity. In our opinion, Mr. Cezary Cichy has set a new standard for the work of the Department of Culture. A standard that is worth continuing and developing – not compromising."

The appeal was signed by, among others, Mirosław Gawęda, general director of the Contemporary Theatre, Adam Opatowicz, director of the Polish Theatre, conductor Paweł Osuchowski, Adam "Łona" Zieliński, Professor Inga Iwasiów, and Professor Eryk Krasucki. Nearly 80 people in total.

Mr. President, we need to hold on and, as they say, move forward. The culture in Szczecin requires change.
