Good news for Polish exporters. All because of data from Germany

- The May reading of the ZEW index is the first signal that the German economy is beginning to wake up from lethargy.
- This is very good news for Polish entrepreneurs exporting to that market.
- The coming months will show whether we are dealing with a sustained upward trend.
The appointment of a new German government after the March parliamentary elections led to an improvement in consumer sentiment among citizens.
The challenges facing the economy in the coming quarters will be among the most important that Chancellor Friedrich Merz will have to face.
ZEW conducts a monthly survey among analysts and practitioners operating in the economy. That is why the data provided by the Zentrum fur Europaische Wirtschaftsforschung (ZEW), which conducts monthly surveys among around 350 financial analysts working in banks, insurance companies and industry, is so important.
The ZEW economic sentiment index rose to 25.2% in May from -14% in April. Analysts had expected an index of +11.3%.
Significant improvements were recorded in particular in the banking sector and export sectors, including the automotive and chemical industries, as well as the production of machinery, steel and metals.
For its part, ZEW emphasises that the recent interest rate cut by the European Central Bank and possible further decisions in this matter are already having a positive impact on the construction industry.
It is also important to increase interest in consumer loans, which may increase consumption over the next few months.
The current assessment of the economic situation in Germany has improved slightlyHowever, there is a certain problem with the reading of the current economic situation assessment indicator , which in May has a value of -82.00, and in April it was -81.20. Which means that in this case there is practically no change.
-With the new government, some progress in tariff disputes and the stabilization of inflation, optimism has increased - ZEW president Achim Wambach comments on the survey results.
On the sidelines, it is worth adding that Poland lacks such an analytical research base of independent experts who are not affiliated with the government.
Advanced knowledge about what awaits us in the coming months and quarters is extremely important for making strategic decisions.
The growth of the ZEW index is an excellent signal for Polish companies, however, we largely sense these sentiments intuitively, but unfortunately we cannot answer the question: what will be the estimated increase in the value of exports to Germany thanks to the growing domestic demand in that country.
