Mandatory insurance for foreign tourists. Big change in a popular country

Tanzania has decided to introduce mandatory insurance for foreign visitors, including tourists, in the amount of $44, even if they have previously purchased a private policy.
Presenting the government's plans to Tanzanian lawmakers on Thursday, Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba said the insurance would be valid for 92 days and would cover medical expenses, repatriation costs, as well as loss, theft or damage to luggage.
You will most likely have to purchase this from the National Insurance Company of Tanzania.
AdvertisementOnly citizens of member states of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will be exempt from this obligation.
Tourists visiting Tanzania must also have a tourist visa, which costs $50.
Since October last year, mandatory insurance for tourists has been in effect in Zanzibar, where adults have to pay $44 and children under 17 $22. In Zanzibar, insurance can also only be purchased through the state-owned Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
Tanzania has been visited by over 5.3 million tourists by April, although the authorities assumed that the 5 million figure would not be reached until July at the earliest. (PAP)
