Starting in July, a revolutionary way to lower your bills. Your own photovoltaic system is no longer necessary.

• At the beginning of July, a new participant appeared on the energy market: the virtual prosumer.
• This is a solution that will enable energy consumers who do not have their own space on which to install photovoltaic panels to benefit from the benefits of prosumer energy.
• Each of us can become a virtual shareholder even in a wind farm.

According to Energa, the virtual prosumer is an important solution for the broader use of renewable energy sources, successfully operating in countries such as Lithuania and the United States. This allows each of us to play our part in climate protection.

A virtual prosumer is a person or company that produces electricity from renewable energy sources, not necessarily on their own property or roof , but, for example, on a photovoltaic farm shared with others. Such a prosumer doesn't consume energy at the point of generation, but "receives" it through billing—so their electricity bills are reduced by the energy their share of the installation produced.

The new prosumer model is therefore addressed to people who do not have the opportunity to install a renewable energy source , e.g. photovoltaic panels, on their own property (e.g. due to lack of space, unfavorable location, local regulations), such as:

• residents of multi-family houses where the collective prosumer model cannot be applied (e.g. due to the building’s construction or conservation protection);
• residents of houses where there is not enough space for installation (e.g. in semi-detached houses with a small garden);
• entrepreneurs;
• local government and public utility units;
• religious associations.

The limitation is the share of the virtual prosumer in the installed capacity of the source, which cannot exceed 50 kW and its contractual capacity .

Until October 19, 2026, a virtual prosumer can only operate within the same Distribution System Operator (DSO) as the generating source. After that date, this requirement will cease to apply, allowing for billing through the CSIRE system.

Due to the distance between the consumption point and the generating source, the virtual prosumer transfers all produced energy to the grid. In this case, there is no self-consumption, which results in distribution fees for the consumed energy . The virtual prosumer covers the cost of distribution fees for all consumed energy. However, the seller bills the prosumer using net-billing.

The detailed definition of a virtual prosumer is provided in Article 2 of the Renewable Energy Sources Act . According to the Act, a virtual prosumer is an end customer who generates electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources for their own needs in a renewable energy installation connected to the electricity distribution grid at a location other than the location where the electricity is supplied to that customer, provided that, in the case of an end customer who is not a household consumer of electricity, such generation does not constitute the predominant business activity.
