Artificial Intelligence Supports Radiologists in Fight Against Prostate Cancer

In Poland, a modern AI4AR platform was created to support radiologists in diagnosing prostate cancer. Thanks to the use of artificial intelligence, it is possible to create imaging reports faster and more accurately and to interpret difficult cases more accurately. The project developed by OPI PIB not only improves the quality of doctors' work, but also raises the standard of patient care.
The Polish AI4AR platform is an innovative tool based on artificial intelligence, which is to help doctors diagnose prostate cancer. The system automatically detects suspicious changes in the prostate gland, calculates prostate volume and PSA density, which are key in assessing the risk of cancer. The finished report is created in accordance with standards, which speeds up work and reduces the risk of errors.
As the creators emphasize, AI does not replace the radiologist, but significantly relieves him:
- Thanks to it, they will have more time to focus on what is most important: better patient care - says Dr. Rafał Jóźwiak, head of the Innovation Center for Digital Medicine at OPI PIB.
The introduction of AI4AR is consistent with the modern approach to medicine, which is VBR – Value-Based Radiology . It is a change of thinking – from the quantity of tests to their quality and usefulness for the patient.
Artificial intelligence helps increase the precision of diagnoses, work efficiency and focus on what is really important – the health and comfort of the patient.
AI4AR also has an educational module. Radiologists can use simulations based on real clinical cases, which allows them to practice recognizing difficult and ambiguous changes.
Everything takes place in a work environment integrated with a DICOM viewer, which allows the doctor to train exactly as if he were analyzing a real study. This is a huge support in learning the profession, especially in prostate cancer diagnostics.
The platform will be officially presented during the "Information Technology in Biomedicine" conference, which will be held in Zabrze on June 23-25. AI4AR has already been tested at the Lower Silesian Center of Oncology, Pulmonology and Hematology as part of the PRAISE-U Polska program. The program aims to detect clinically significant cases of prostate cancer while reducing overdiagnosis.
- In the fight against cancer, time and precision count, and thanks to the OPI PIB platform, we gain just that – says Dr. hab. n. med. Krzysztof Tupikowski , head of the Urological Cancer Treatment Center.
AI4AR is the work of a team of experts from the Center for Innovation for Digital Medicine , operating at the Information Processing Center - National Research Institute (OPI PIB). The project was created as part of the INFOSTRATEG program of the National Center for Research and Development.
OPI PIB is an institute that creates advanced digital tools for science and medicine. It conducts research in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence, and also develops online education and scientific analyses. AI4AR is an example of modern technology that can really change the future of imaging diagnostics.
