More and more citizens of the European Union and EFTA countries are being treated in Poland. The National Health Fund (NFZ) estimates that revenues from this source will reach PLN 842.76 million this year, and will exceed PLN 1 billion next year - according to the draft financial plan of the National Health Fund for 2026.

The National Health Fund's revenues are growing year by year, resulting from settlements with EU/EFTA (European Free Trade Agreement) member states for healthcare services provided to their citizens in Poland. We checked how much the payer earns from treating foreigners and what the forecasts are for this year and 2026.

The summary included in next year's draft financial plan of the National Health Fund shows that in recent years, revenues from settlements with member states for services provided in Poland have grown as follows:

  • 2019 - PLN 279.03 million,
  • 2020 - PLN 329.33 million,
  • 2021 - PLN 320.62 million,
  • 2022 - PLN 431.45 million,
  • 2023 - PLN 668.66 million,
  • 2024 - PLN 833.16 million.

According to the project, by the end of 2025 they will reach PLN 842.76 million. In the following year, according to the estimates of the Department of International Cooperation of the National Health Fund Headquarters, they will reach as much as PLN 1.057 billion, which would constitute 0.49% of the total planned revenues of the Fund.

The growing revenues are to be the result not only of efficiently conducted international coordination, but also of growing interest in treatment in Poland. Patients from the EU and EFTA benefit from the Polish healthcare system thanks to regulations enabling them to access medical services outside the borders of the country of insurance.

Coordination of treatment, let us recall, enables people insured in one Member State to use necessary health services in other EU and EFTA countries during a temporary stay. The basis for using them is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a certificate replacing it.

The right to treatment is granted on the same terms as citizens of the country to which the foreigner has chosen to go. If, for example, a country requires paying part of the costs of a visit to a doctor, then you have to pay for it. In France, for example, people covered by public insurance cover 30% of the doctor's fee, in Austria - the cost of calling an ambulance, and in Germany - they add 10 euros to each day of hospital stay.
