Wrocław/ 13th place of the Medical University of Wrocław in the world ranking

In the area of ​​research on heart and circulatory system diseases, the Medical University of Wrocław was ranked 13th in the prestigious US News Best Global Universities 2025–2026 ranking. Scientists from Lower Silesia overtook researchers from Oxford in the UK and Yale in the US.

The US News Best Global Universities ranking is global. The classification is based on the assessment of research achievements and scientific reputation of universities. Institutions from the US and over hundreds of other countries were assessed based on 13 indicators. According to the authors of the report, these are 2,250 of the best universities in the world.

In this ranking, the Medical University of Wrocław was ranked 13th in the area of ​​research on heart and circulatory system diseases - ex aequo with Stanford University in the USA. It overtook such universities as the University of Oxford (Great Britain) and Yale University (USA). The key to success - as the authorities of the Wrocław university claim - was the creation of the Institute of Heart Diseases, which operates at the University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław.

"Polish cardiology should not have complexes, on the contrary, it is a national source of pride - we prove it at the Medical University of Wrocław - the best Polish medical university in world rankings" - says the rector of the Medical University of Wrocław, director of the Institute of Heart Diseases, prof. Piotr Ponikowski.

The rector of the Wrocław university emphasizes that both the budget of the institute and the team are smaller than most of the universities included in the list. The key to eliminating the differences is the quality of scientific research conducted at the institution.

The Institute of Heart Diseases has been operating for six years. It is the youngest transplant center in the country; in just four years, experts from the institute have performed over 200 heart transplants and 80 long-term left ventricular support systems.

A few weeks ago, the Wrocław team was the first in Poland to perform a transcatheter implantation of the Tendyne mitral valve on a beating heart, without the need to open the chest.

The Institute is also preparing to open a comprehensive pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery center – with the youngest patients with heart defects in mind. (PAP)
