A documentary about a Latin legend is coming. It will tell the tragic story of the beloved singer

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez is still considered one of the biggest stars of Tejano and Latin music in the world. Her story was first introduced to the world thanks to the film "Selena", which earned Jennifer Lopez a Golden Globe nomination. Now, thanks to the documentary "Selena y Los Dinos", the story of the Mexican-American artist will reach Netflix users.
Directed by Isabel Castro , the film will debut on the platform this winter. The documentary about the late “Queen of Tejano” will follow her stage career, life on the road and off, according to the announcement. Her legacy and story will be told through never-before-seen footage from her private family archives.
“As a filmmaker, I wanted to pay tribute to her enduring legacy while also providing a glimpse into her life behind the scenes,” Castro said in a press release, as quoted by Billboard. “Through personal archives and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before. I am grateful to her family for their trust and support, and I can’t wait for a global audience to experience the magic, love, and community that Selena gave us all .”
The documentary "Selena y Los Dinos" was among 87 films that premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival , where it won a special jury award in the U.S. documentary category. The production also won audience awards at SXSW and the Miami Film Festival this year. Her sister Suzette, the drummer for Los Dinos , did not hide her joy that Selena's story will be known to the whole world.
Who was Selena?"We are grateful for the platform that helps bring Selena's story to fans around the world," she said.
Selena is still considered a symbol - both her music and her premature death. The singer showed vocal talent from a young age. At the age of nine, she began performing in the band Los Dinos , which her father founded. In her career, she won one Grammy Award . Although she was expected to be a world-class star , her career was interrupted on March 31, 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar , the then manager of Selena's fan club. During an argument, she shot the singer, who died in hospital from losing a large amount of blood.
On April 12, 1995, George W. Bush , then governor of Texas, declared April 16 as "Selena Day" in Texas. Every year, concerts called "Fiesta De La Flor" are organized in her honor. In November 2017, the Quintanilla family unveiled a star for the singer on the Walk of Fame.
