The team was led by renowned Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He has designed buildings such as the House of Music museum in Budapest , a tourist building located on the grounds of the Ruinart champagne house vineyard in Reims, and a futuristic public toilet in Tokyo, which appeared in Wim Wenders' acclaimed 2023 film Perfect Days.

The modular circle consists of segments that are joined together using both modern methods and the traditional Japanese "nuki" technology. This method of joining wooden elements was used, among other things, in the construction of Japanese temples and shrines.

"The Great Circle": At the Center of Expo 2025 in Osaka

The structure, measuring over two kilometers in circumference and 700 meters in diameter, was erected on the artificial island of Yumeshima. Its total area exceeds 61,000 square meters. According to its creators, the "Great Circle" is intended to symbolize the unity of all 150 countries participating in Expo 2025.

According to the designers of the "Grand Circle," approximately 70 percent of all the wood, including the cypress used in its construction, comes from Japan. The rest of the structure was constructed from pine imported from abroad.
