A famous football player became a member of the board of the dictator's party
Former German national footballer Mesut Ozil was appointed one of 39 new board members at Erdogan's AKP party congress in Ankara, state news agency Anadolu reported.
In practice, the party’s executive power has little significance. Turkey’s parliamentary system was replaced by a presidential system under a 2017 constitutional amendment. Since then, Erdogan has been able to exercise power with virtually no restrictions. Moreover, as confirmed by the European Commission, the judiciary is under government control in many parts of the country. According to Anadolu, Erdogan was re-elected as party leader at the congress by a majority of 1,547 votes.

Ozil has long made no secret of his support for Erdogan. In 2018, a photo with Erdogan caused a scandal. After it was published in the media, the player resigned from the German national team. Erdogan was also a witness at Ozil's wedding in Turkey. The two watched the match between the Netherlands and Turkey during the 2024 European Championships together from the stands of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
