Iga Świątek beats Russian in Wimbledon opening match. Important signal from London

Looking at the WTA rankings, the Pole was the clear favorite in Tuesday's match. The Russian is currently number 64 in the world, while Świątek is number four on the ranking list . However, this year's Wimbledon has already convinced us, after only two days of the event, that favorites can suffer serious setbacks.
Iga Świątek better than Polina Kudiermietowa. Successful opening of the Polish womanThe Polish tennis player came to London after the WTA 500 Bad Homburg final. In Germany, Świątek showed herself well, although she fell a bit short of the final triumph. However, the Pole played in her first grass court final since… 2018, when she played in the most important clash at Wimbledon – but the junior one.
This also shows how uncomfortable the grass surface is for the Pole. On the other hand, in the case of Świątek's ambitions, one can be sure that the athlete will want to consistently make progress in results in this, the summer part of the season.
An important step was taken in the match with the Russian. It must be admitted that Kudermetova managed to surprise the Pole several times, especially with the precision of her plays – including her trademark shortcuts just behind the net. The first set? A tough 45 minutes and the Pole won 7:5, although Świątek had her first opportunity to break only at… the set point. This mission ended in success, the Pole won a game of her opponent's serve and gained an advantage over her opponent.
It must be admitted, however, that the Pole was nervous. Mainly, it was about her own mistakes, resulting from the desire to take the initiative. The nightmares from the Bad Homburg final were repeated somewhat. There, however, Jessica Pegula was able to consistently take advantage of the Pole's mistakes. This time, Świątek made fewer of them, which does not mean that if a better opponent than the Russian had been standing on the other side of the net, it would not have ended in bigger problems - than a two-set victory.
In the second set, Świątek played much more confidently, closing the qualification to the second round of the tournament. The second set is an important signal, showing that the Pole is feeling more and more confident on grass courts. And this bodes well for the future.
Iga Świątek's memories of Wimbledon. The Pole was a champion! The best Polish tennis player in history has quite good memories of the legendary tournament in London. At 24 years old, Świątek won the junior tournament at Wimbledon in 2018. It was certainly a valuable moment for the tennis player from Raszyn near Warsaw, who was starting to dream of great successes.
Looking at the results achieved in the senior edition in London, Świątek performed best during the 2023 edition. At that time, the Polish player reached the quarterfinals of the event. For comparison, in the other Grand Slam tournaments, the Polish champion reached at least the semifinals (Australian Open) or won the finals (Roland Garros and US Open).
