It started with a question for Iga Świątek. Now he'll play her in the Wimbledon final.

It started with a question for Iga Świątek. Now he'll play her in the Wimbledon final.

Amanda Anisimova was considered a tremendous talent from a young age. She quickly confirmed this in senior tennis, reaching the semifinals of Roland Garros in 2019. At the time, she wasn't even 18. Although she quickly showed what she was capable of, she later struggled to follow through and maintain a long-term presence among the top players.

In 2023, she surprised fans by publishing a very mature post. The American announced that she had to put her career on hold. She claimed that "participating in women's tennis tournaments is unbearable right now." She returned a few months later, at the start of the 2024 season, and is now enjoying the greatest success of her career.

This is how Iga Świątek's rival returned to the top

In many tournaments in 2024, Anisimova took advantage of the "protected ranking" provision, which grants her the right to participate directly in tournaments after a long break due to health reasons. She painstakingly rebuilt her ranking – suffice it to say that at the previous edition of Wimbledon, she was eliminated... in the third round of qualifying. She even missed the first round of the main draw.

Her breakthrough came at the WTA 1000 tournament in Canada, where Anisimova defeated Aryna Sabalenka and ultimately reached the final. Although she lost to Jessica Pegula, she returned to the top 50. She was once again close to the top, a position she still aspired to.

This year's Roland Garros already gave Anisimova further reason for optimism. She reached the fourth round, even though the American is considered a player who performs much better on "fast" surfaces, such as hard or grass. Ultimately, it was Wimbledon that confirmed where Anisimova could feel most dangerous to all her top opponents.

This is how Iga Świątek's rival started Wimbledon

She started off brilliantly, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Yulia Putintseva. It was the only such result in the entire first round of the tournament. Things didn't get any easier after that, and the American dropped two sets en route to the quarterfinals: to Dalma Galfi (!) and Linda Noskova. In both instances, she delivered the decisive blow.

She eliminated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a tiebreak, and now, after a heroic three-set battle, she also managed to knock out Aryna Sabalenka. She will face Iga Świątek in the final. Interestingly, just a few days ago, the American reacted to the Pole's comments about strawberry pasta. Anisimova, like thousands of other foreign internet users, couldn't believe that it was one of the most popular dishes in Poland.

"Pasta with what?" Amanda Anisimova asked jokingly, unable to understand how the popular dish was prepared in Poland. When she wrote these words, she probably didn't expect that just a few days later she would still be participating in this edition of Wimbledon. And that she would be able to exchange a few words with the Polish woman, whom she would meet for the first time in professional tennis. This time, too, she wanted to spring another big surprise.
