Not just Iga Świątek. Here are all the Polish Grand Slam finals

Not just Iga Świątek. Here are all the Polish Grand Slam finals

The 24-year-old Świątek has so far won the French Open in Paris four times – in 2020 and 2022-24, and her collection of Grand Slam victories is complemented by the 2022 US Open in New York.

Compared to these achievements, her 2021 doubles final, which she reached in the French capital alongside American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, is lost.

With five Grand Slam titles to her name, the player under Belgian coach Wim Fissette is already the most successful in Polish tennis. Łukasz Kubot has won the doubles twice, and Jan Zieliński has two mixed doubles titles.

However, Jadwiga Jędrzejowska reached the most finals before World War II—seven, including three in singles. She won only one—in doubles in Paris in 1939, pairing with Frenchwoman Simone Mathieu.

Apart from her and Świątek, Kubot, Zieliński and Marcin Matkowski also appeared in the Grand Slam final three times, but never in singles.

The 28-year-old Zieliński, specializing in doubles, made his debut in the decisive stage of a Grand Slam in Melbourne in 2023 as the 10th Pole in history, when he and Hugo Nyse from Monaco lost the title match to the hosts Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata 4-6, 6-7 (4-7).

Last year, he fared better, but in mixed doubles. Paired with Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan, they defeated American Desirae Krawczyk and Briton Neal Skupski 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 11-9 in the Australian Open final. Less than six months later, in London, they repeated their success, defeating Mexicans Giuliana Olmos and Santiago Gonzalez 6-4, 6-2 in the Wimbledon decider.

These were also Poland's first two mixed doubles victories. The Polish team had lost the previous five finals—three in Paris and two in New York—and the title was contested by Jędrzejowska, Klaudia Jans-Ignacik, Matkowski twice, and Alicja Rosolska.

Last season, Zieliński became the second Polish winner of the competition on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The first was Kubot, who in 2017, in a duo with Brazilian Marcelo Melo, defeated Austrian Oliver Marach and Croatian Mate Pavic in the final 5:7, 7:5, 7:6 (7-2), 3:6, 13:11.

Kubot won his first title in 2014 in Melbourne, paired with Swede Robert Lindstedt, while Wojciech Fibak, together with Australian Kim Warwick, were the best in this event in 1978.
