Surprise! 44-year-old stops Inter! End of dreams in KMŚ
Up until now, the situation in the Club World Cup had been clear. In the Brazilian duel, Palmeiras had been better than Botafogo (1-0), and then the competition was dominated by European teams - Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. It seemed that they would be joined by the Champions League finalist, Inter Milan.
The Italian club, after victories over Urawa Red Diamonds (2:1) and River Plate (2:0), faced Flamengo, which had two draws in the group stage and defeated Ulsan HD (4:2). Inter was the favourite for this clash, but it quickly turned out that advancing to the quarter-finals would not be an easy task for them.
It took just three minutes for Flamengo players to capitalize on their opponents' mistakes, with German Cano scoring from close range against Yann Sommer! After that goal, Inter had to push forward, but it didn't necessarily work out, and the unexpected scoreline remained until half-time.
The 44-year-old stopped the Champions League finalist! UnbelievableInter's game didn't change, instead of goal chances we watched another fierce clash between the teams, and Cristian Chivu decided to make changes and Luis Henrique, Petar Sucic and Valentin Carboni appeared on the pitch. And then Sebastiano Esposito too.
And it was the latter who in the 69th minute brilliantly crossed to Lautaro Martinez, who passed the ball towards Stefan de Vrij. The Dutchman could have, and even should have, equalized, but he made a mistake and Inter still needed at least a goal.
Shortly afterwards, Lautaro Martinez finally had three good chances in a few minutes, but Inter didn't manage to do that either. And all thanks to Fabio's brilliant save! And when the 44-year-old couldn't save the ball, the Argentine hit the post and Flamengo finally pulled off a surprise. And won 2-0, because Hercules scored in injury time!
The Brazilians have advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will play either Manchester City or Al-Hilal. The match between these teams will take place on Tuesday, July 1 at 3:00 CET.
