Aljezur: EscolaNova celebrates Sun Day with activities and outdoor cinema

Aljezur: EscolaNova celebrates Sun Day with activities and outdoor cinema

In June, EscolaNova celebrates the summer solstice with another edition of Sun Day, which takes place once a month and transforms it into a vibrant space for celebration , which extends from dawn to dusk.

On Sunday, June 22nd, Sun Day or Dia do Sol begins with the “Mar e Monte” cooking workshop, this time with António Rosa, a profound connoisseur of traditional Algarve cuisine — shaped by the sea and the region’s vegetable gardens. In this workshop, he shares old recipes with a contemporary twist, in a moment where stories and aromas meet. It’s a dive into the flavors, memories and landscape of the Algarve.

In the afternoon, the program, which runs from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, will focus on the visual arts, this time with Ricardo Falcão, Madalena Victorino and Sandra Sanches, in a collage workshop for restless hands and creative minds. The body takes center stage with “Day by Day”, a sensitive and poetic dance show, with humor mixed in, by Ana Jezabel, performed by the choreographer herself and Sofia Kafol, designed for all audiences.

At sunset, the stage is for music: the «Concerto ao Sol» with Alex Moniz and Pedro Salvador brings songs that celebrate life, in communion with nature and the audience. And, to finish, a moment of introspection and well-being: Nídia Barata guides us on a journey with Tibetan bowls and gongs, to harmonize body, mind and spirit.

Entry to Sun Day is free, with the exception of the “Sea and Mountain” cooking workshop with António Rosa, which requires a ticket. The price is 10 euros and tickets are available online .

SUN DAY takes place once a month and transforms EscolaNova into a vibrant space for celebration, which lasts from dawn to dusk. With a rich and diverse programme, this day invites us to actively participate: cooking, learning, playing, arranging, moving our bodies or simply warming ourselves in the sun. Everything happens around the know-how of doing things with our hands and bodies, the wisdom of the land and the arts in their most varied expressions. A true community celebration, woven from sharing, memories, discoveries and encounters.

Still in the month in which summer sets in, on June 27th, at 9:30 pm, we continue the film series “The Room of the World”, with the screening of the film “The Fall of the Sky”, by Eryk Rocha and Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha. Based on the book of the same name, the result of 30 years of work by the shaman Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, one of the main indigenous leaders in the world, and the French anthropologist Bruce Albert, the film presents an incisive reflection on the widespread predation of peoples and the planet, caused by those who Davi calls the “people of the commodity”, that is, the whites .

This time, the guest to share her perspective on the projected universe is Anabela Roque, who will lead the conversation with the audience. Anabela Roque is a filmmaker and researcher, developing her work in various dimensions of cinema. She collaborates with the portal «Buala.org» and with the Brazilian digital magazine «Amazônia Latitude | Humanidades Ambientais», where she regularly publishes texts on Brazilian cinema, with a special focus on productions dedicated to the Amazon theme.

Between 2016 and 2018, she graduated in Film Directing at the International Film Academy in Rio de Janeiro. She made her debut as a director in 2017 with the short film «Piano Forte», followed by «Sempre Verei Cores No Seu Cinza» (2018), also in the documentary genre.

He lived in Brazil between 2013 and 2018, collaborating with independent production companies and directors in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Before dedicating himself entirely to cinema, he worked in the audiovisual sector, particularly in programming for subscription television channels, between 1999 and 2013, in Madrid and Lisbon.

Tickets cost 5 euros and are on sale online .

«The Fall of the Sky» is part of EscolaNova's film series, entitled «The Room of the World», a meeting space where cinema becomes a tool for reflection and change, curated by Candela Varas.

EscolaNova – Center for arts and artistic experimentation

EscolaNova was created from the renovation of the old Bordeira primary school , becoming an arts centre dedicated to artistic experimentation and creation. This new space has a regular and diverse programme and is a meeting point between the local culture of the village and the surrounding area and the performing arts.

The former Bordeira primary school was loaned to Lavrar o Mar by Aljezur City Council for 10 years. The building's renovation project was developed by architects Ana Jara and Carlos Gomes, from the ARTÉRIA architecture collective, executed by contractor Fernando das Neves Domingues and financed by Aljezur City Council and the Healthy Neighborhoods program.

Program

11:00 — 14:00 Cooking Workshop SEA AND MOUNTAIN with Antonio Rosa

M/12 . 10 euros (single price)

Organic farmer and food curator, António Rosa is a profound connoisseur of the culinary traditions of the Algarve — a cuisine shaped by the sea and the vegetable gardens that shape the local landscape. In this workshop, he invites us to taste ancient recipes with a contemporary twist, in a moment of sharing stories, aromas and knowledge. On the menu: Algarve-style snails, gazpacho, grilled sardines, “upside-down” potatoes and mountain salad.

2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Workshop COLLAGE with Ricardo Falcao and Madalena Victorino

Collage is an art form that transforms used paper into new images through the creative juxtaposition of pasted cutouts. Practiced by countless artists over time, this technique invites us to delve into a visual universe made up of fragments: pages from old or current books, illustrations, photographs, paintings and graphics that, when combined, gain new meanings. Between hands and imagination, a landscape is born composed of pieces of paper, rich in readings and suggestions. An afternoon to explore the evocative power of the image and give shape to pictorial ideas with glue, scissors and creativity.

4:30 p.m. Dance DAY BY DAY with Ana Jezabel and Sofia Kafol

«STOP! Look around you at the trees; the Moon; a flock of birds… and listen to what surrounds you, what is inside you and even the silence. Memorize these sensations that ultimately define your relationship with the World. They are the driving force of your Daily Life! The best things in life do not have a lasting form. Ask yourself: Where am I? Answer: Thank you. I am here!»

6:30 p.m. Music CONCERT IN THE SUN with Alex Moniz and Pedro Salvador

In this edition, the «Concerto ao Sol» brings new sounds and musical landscapes with Alex Moniz and Pedro Salvador. Two guitarists, with their electric guitars, meet once again to invent and reinvent songs that they bring in their luggage. They are nostalgic melodies and vibrant riffs that, as the sun sets on the horizon, fill the air with energy, rhythm and joy — in an open-air concert designed for all ages, where singing, dancing and sharing happy moments happen naturally.

Alex Moniz is a musician and producer with a degree in Jazz from the Hot Clube de Portugal. A multi-instrumentalist and creator of projects such as Galgo, Yakuza and Qer Dier, he has also composed for dance shows and musically directed several creations in the field of performing and community arts. In 2023, he founded Meio do Mato – Associação Cultural, in Monchique.

Pedro Salvador is a musician, composer and performer, with a career marked by musical creation in theater, dance and community art projects. A composer of original songs and a member of Hill's Union, he has collaborated extensively with Madalena Victorino and companies such as Hotel Europa, combining music with social and poetic themes.

7:30 p.m. THERAPEUTIC VIBRATIONS WITH SOUND BOWLS AND GONGS with Nídia Barata

Nídia Barata invites us to explore the healing power of sound, through Tibetan bowls and gongs, in a unique experience of self-knowledge and well-being. When sounded, these bowls and gongs vibrate in a special way, revealing their therapeutic qualities, capable of promoting balance and inner harmony. On this sound journey, Nídia will teach us techniques to take care of ourselves, using the sound and vibrations of the bowls and gongs as powerful tools for deep relaxation and energetic recovery.
