Bolsonaro leaves house arrest to undergo tests at a hospital in Brasília

Former President Jair Bolsonaro left his residence in Brasília on Saturday, where he is under house arrest, to undergo medical examinations to investigate a recent case of "fever, cough, persistent episodes of gastroesophageal reflux and hiccups," a medical report said.

According to the document signed by doctors at the DF Star Hospital in Brasília, Bolsonaro was admitted to the hospital in the morning and underwent laboratory and imaging tests, which revealed "residual images of two recent lung infections possibly related to episodes of bronchoaspiration."

Doctors also stated that an endoscopy showed the former president's persistent esophagitis and gastritis, less intense but requiring ongoing medication.

"(Bolsonaro) should continue with treatment for high blood pressure, reflux and preventive measures for bronchoaspiration, being released at 1:58 p.m.," the medical team added.

Bolsonaro had received authorization from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to leave house arrest to report to the hospital on Tuesday. In the ruling, Moraes had allowed the former president to remain at the hospital for six to eight hours.

In the request seen by Reuters, Bolsonaro's lawyers argued that the request was motivated by an assessment of his health. Among the tests requested were blood and urine samples, three CT scans, two ultrasounds, an echocardiogram, and a digestive endoscopy.

Earlier this month, Moraes ordered Bolsonaro's house arrest, considering there had been a repeat failure to comply with precautionary measures previously imposed against him, such as the ban on using social media directly or indirectly.

The former president is a defendant in a trial at the Supreme Federal Court for attempted coup d'état, scheduled to begin on September 2.
