Trump's War and Peace and Mamdani's Surprise in New York

After a holiday break, we return to Fire and Fury for a quick summary of weeks of dramatic developments inside and outside the United States. Donald Trump dragged the country into a new conflict in the Middle East last weekend, earning him criticism from the isolationist wing of the MAGA movement, but he agreed to a (fragile) ceasefire on Monday. And he secured a commitment from his European allies in NATO to invest 5% of GDP in defense.
Meanwhile, in New York, the Democratic primaries for the November 4 local elections ended on Tuesday with the surprise victory of Zohran Mamdani, a virtually unknown candidate from the left wing of the party, who beat former governor Andrew Cuomo. It is a triumph that could give us clues about the direction the Democratic Party may take in this period of opposition to Trump.
